# Robert Nikic Reviews Amazon Dash Buttons: What the Flop Taught Sellers

Robert Nikic reviews Amazon's Dash buttons: the timeline, the German court ruling, why they died and what the flop taught sellers about repeat purchases.

**In short:** In this edition of Robert Nikic Reviews, I'm looking back at Amazon's Dash buttons, the little branded Wi-Fi buttons you stuck in your kitchen to reorder detergent or paper towels. As a product, they failed. As a signal, they were one of the clearest tells of where Amazon was headed: owning everyday, repeat-purchase goods.

I brought Dash up on a podcast because it explains how I think about consumables. People forget it existed. I didn't.

### A correction first

On the show, I said Amazon tested Dash for about a year. My memory compressed it. The record shows the buttons were introduced in 2015 ([CNN](https://www.cnn.com/2019/08/01/tech/amazon-dash-button-dead)), Amazon stopped selling them in early 2019 ([Vox](https://www.vox.com/the-goods/2019/3/1/18246383/amazon-dash-buttons-discontinued-alexa-germany-regulation)), and the physical buttons stopped working on August 31, 2019 ([TechCrunch](https://techcrunch.com/2019/08/01/amazon-is-killing-off-the-dash-button-later-this-month/)). That's roughly four years, not one. The point I was making still holds, but I'd rather get the dates right.

### The Dash button timeline

When |
What happened |

2015 |
Amazon introduces Dash buttons for Prime members ([CNN](https://www.cnn.com/2019/08/01/tech/amazon-dash-button-dead)) |

2016 |
Dash launches in Germany, the UK and Austria ([TechCrunch](https://techcrunch.com/2019/01/11/amazon-dash-buttons-judged-to-breach-consumer-rules-in-germany/)) |

Jan 2019 |
A higher regional court in Munich rules the buttons don't give German shoppers enough information about the purchase ([TechCrunch](https://techcrunch.com/2019/01/11/amazon-dash-buttons-judged-to-breach-consumer-rules-in-germany/)) |

Early 2019 |
Amazon stops selling physical buttons ([Vox](https://www.vox.com/the-goods/2019/3/1/18246383/amazon-dash-buttons-discontinued-alexa-germany-regulation)) |

Aug 31, 2019 |
Physical buttons stop working. Virtual versions live on in the app and on some devices ([TechCrunch](https://techcrunch.com/2019/08/01/amazon-is-killing-off-the-dash-button-later-this-month/), [CNN](https://www.cnn.com/2019/08/01/tech/amazon-dash-button-dead)) |

### What was a Dash button, exactly?

A small plastic button with a brand logo on it, sold for about $5 ([Vox](https://www.vox.com/the-goods/2019/3/1/18246383/amazon-dash-buttons-discontinued-alexa-germany-regulation)). You'd connect it to Wi-Fi, stick it near the thing you used, and press it when you ran low. Tide by the washer, paper towels in the kitchen, pet food by the dog bowl. One press, and the order went in.

### Why did Amazon kill the Dash button?

Three reasons show up in the reporting.

- **Better replacements.** Amazon said virtual Dash buttons, Alexa voice shopping and appliances with built-in Dash Replenishment had become more popular ([Vox](https://www.vox.com/the-goods/2019/3/1/18246383/amazon-dash-buttons-discontinued-alexa-germany-regulation)).

- **The court problem.** In Germany, the Munich court sided with consumer group Verbraucherzentrale NRW, which argued that pressing a button with no price or product details on it didn't tell shoppers enough about what they were buying. Amazon disagreed and said it would appeal, calling the decision "against innovation" ([TechCrunch](https://techcrunch.com/2019/01/11/amazon-dash-buttons-judged-to-breach-consumer-rules-in-germany/)).

- **The look.** This one's mine. A kitchen covered in branded plastic buttons looked tacky. Most people didn't want their house to look like a vending machine.

### My verdict scorecard

Criteria |
Score |
Why |

Idea |
9/10 |
Reordering with zero friction is exactly right |

Execution |
4/10 |
One button per brand doesn't scale in a real home |

5/10 |
No price shown at the moment of purchase |

Strategic value |
10/10 |
It trained shoppers to reorder household goods from Amazon |

Overall |
7/10 |
A failed product that did its real job |

### What did Dash really tell us?

Here's the part I said on the show. Amazon knew it would become the largest consumables marketplace in the world. Dash was an experiment in getting people to stop thinking about where they buy everyday things.

That habit is the real story. Not many people go out specifically to buy toothpaste anymore. A big share of people are adapting to buying on Amazon instead, because it's faster, it's often cheaper and you don't have to leave the house. Even Amazon's own smart home VP said the core mission of Dash succeeded ([Vox](https://www.vox.com/the-goods/2019/3/1/18246383/amazon-dash-buttons-discontinued-alexa-germany-regulation)). The button went away. The behavior stayed.

### What sellers should take from it

- **Repeat purchases beat one-time purchases.** Products people run out of are worth more over time than products they buy once.

- **Remove friction, but keep trust.** The German ruling shows that convenience can't come at the cost of the customer knowing what they're paying.

- **Watch what platforms test, not just what they keep.** Experiments reveal strategy. Dash told sellers years early that consumables would be a core battleground.

- **The format will change.** Buttons became voice orders, then subscriptions, then automatic reorders. Build on the habit, not the gadget.

▸ **The consumer side of this**

The Dash court case is a good reminder that clear pricing is part of a healthy marketplace. In my advisory work on SDG 8 & 9, I push for making it cheap and simple for small sellers to reach customers. That only works long-term if customers trust what they're buying. Fast checkout and clear information aren't in conflict. The best platforms deliver both.

### FAQ: Amazon Dash buttons

**When did Amazon Dash buttons stop working?**

Amazon switched off the physical buttons on August 31, 2019.

**Why were Dash buttons ruled illegal in Germany?**

A Munich court found they didn't give shoppers enough information about the product and price at the moment of purchase.

**What replaced Dash buttons?**

Virtual Dash buttons in the app, Alexa voice ordering, Subscribe & Save and appliances with automatic reordering.

**Amazon lost the button and won the habit.**

#### What does Robert Nikic think of Amazon Dash buttons?

Robert Nikic thinks the Dash button failed as a gadget but succeeded as a strategy. It signaled early that Amazon wanted to own everyday consumables, which is why he tells sellers to pay attention to repeat-purchase products.
